Fashion Rules To Live By

Fashion Rules to Live By

It’s January, and it’s a time of the year when, after the Holidays, a lot of us want to simplify. You may be thinking that now is a good time to go through your closet and get rid of a few things. Sometimes, it’s hard to know what to get rid of. Perhaps you are holding on to some clothing items because they are the size you want to be. Getting rid of the size you want to be is like admitting defeat. Or is it? Isn’t it more important to look fabulous and feel comfortable, no matter what size we are in?

Or maybe, you have some great items but don’t know how to wear them. Do you have too many fashion “rules” swimming around in your head, making you feel that you are going to wear something “wrong”? I am here to tell you that the “rules” are easier to follow thank you think. For me, I refuse to follow most of them.

Can brown and black be worn together? Yes! They’re both fairly neutral… also, leopard print is totally brown and black, together. It works, doesn’t it? If I wear blue and black together, won’t I look like a bruise? NO! That’s crazy. Blue and black can go together. Do they make you happy together? If that answer is “yes,” then great, and if it’s “no,” then don’t do it.

The whole purpose of fashion is to help you have fun and to feel confident in yourself. If you put on an outfit and you feel ugly in it, then take it off. It’s not worth wearing, no matter what it is!

Here are a few more fashion ideas to help you to evaluate what you have and to put aside limiting “rules”:

  • Don’t feel that you have to commit to one style. You need to express you, in a way that makes you happy. Maybe on Monday, it is pattern mixing at its finest. Tuesday is layer after layer of neutral, and Wednesday you’re in all black with a statement cardigan or kimono as the star of the show. You do you. All of us have many sides and layers to our personalities. Our clothing can reflect this.
  • Dress for your body shape. All of us have great features and problem areas. Dress in a way that emphasizes your good features. For example, if your tummy is your problem area, then you may want to wear shirts and dresses with structure in the waist area to help define the tummy. Or perhaps you keep your tops a little bit looser. Even if skin-tight t-shirts are popular, they may not be for you.
  • Don’t take fashion too seriously. You can have fun with it but don’t let it dictate all of your choices. Don’t dress like someone else. Dress to be you.
  • Mix trendy items with basics. Basic items like solid colored sweaters, t-shirts, and jeans never go out of style. Mix these basics with—anything! Try a scarf, a pop of color, a trendy necklace or shirt. You don’t have to throw out your entire wardrobe every year. Invest in good basics that feel good. You will be able to wear them for a long time.
  • Build your wardrobe around items that you love. It doesn’t matter what the items are. If you love an item, wear it and use it. You will be able to find things to go with it, no matter what the current trend is. For example, perhaps you have a black pair of stretchy pants that are oh so comfortable and look good on your legs. They will be able to go with a number of tops, sweaters, layers, etc. Perhaps when you shop, you will keep your eye out for other things to go with what you have and love.
  • Wear what makes you feel beautiful. End of story. This is the most important “rule” of all! And if you need to find something you think is cute and that also makes you feel beautiful, check out my new website where you can buy LuLaRoe clothes online. Trust me, you are going to feel as good as you look.
